This course (Part 1 and 2) will prepare participants to familiarize themselves with the roles and responsibilities of an aviation medical examiner and assessor through a curriculum that covers the competency framework published in the ICAO Manual of Civil Aviation Medicine as well as foundational knowledge of ICAO Annex 1 SARPS and the aviation environment.
The course (Part 3, 4 and 5) will provide participants with practical experience of the aviation operating environment in order to appreciate its impact on human physiology and performance.
Participants (primary target audience only) will be able to apply ICAO SARPs, perform effective licensing medical examination, critically evaluate medical documents and make medical fitness conclusions for ICAO Class 1, 2 and 3 Medical Assessments
Part 1: Regulatory Medicine (e-learning)
Participants will be able to appreciate the mechanisms and medical provisions that allow ICAO to ensure international flight safety in terms of personnel licensing and medical fitness certification, the objectives of conducting licensing medical examination, and the instruments and standards used when determining the medical fitness of licence applicants.
Part 2: Foundational Aviation Medicine (e-learning)
Participants will be able to explain the physiological effects aircrew and passengers may incur from flying at altitude and how to cope with potential altitude-related hazards, including the application of human factors and crew resource management in aviation safety.
Part 3: Conducting Medical Examination (classroom)
Participants will be able to select the correct techniques and strategies to facilitate voluntary declaration of medical issues by licence applicants, the approach used in performing systematic and targeted clinical examination and the key considerations when evaluating mental health, visual, hearing, balance and speech functions which are essential to flight duties.
Part 4: Risk-based Aeromedical Evaluation (classroom)
Participants will be able to justify the correct approach and investigation methods in medical evaluation to assess a licence applicant’s aeromedical fitness for certification given a set of ophthalmological, cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, metabolic and endocrine, hematological and urological conditions.
Part 5: Operational Aviation Medicine (classroom)
Participants will be able to comply with requirements of international health regulations when analysing the health and human factors hazards present in a typical ATC work environment, and planning and conducting a cockpit functional assessment of a licence applicant with a physical disability.
